An image I blogged about a couple of weeks ago featured a rather unique scene of the Seattle skyline. Typically, this isn’t something that you get to see very often, let alone in the dead of winter because odds are good it’s going to be overcast. If you look back at the image from the other post, you’ll notice behind the tall, black building a bright light behind where the building meets the skyline.
That is the moon rising. It happens twice a year around each of the solstices. It’s pretty amazing to be taking a photograph of the city and suddenly, you’re met with a view like the one from today’s image.
What a difference a tiny ball of light makes! This is no secret either. I was shooting this from a ferry dock, with a slew of about 30 other photographers around me. It was a decent challenge to find some deck space to set up my gear and tripod. Nonetheless, Of the differing scenes from the various stages of twilight through the moon’s arc towards the top of the sky, this was my favourite. The sky is a cool yet warm shade of blue, giving enough contrast to the city lights and reflections in the water. What makes the shot for me is the intersection of the moon with the building. I opted not to mask in an exposure of the moon that would give it a correct exposure because I actually prefer it a little blown out. It kind of draws your attention to it. If you look carefully also, you can make out some of the moon’s surface.

Love the shot, mate. The color play is great and the way that moon is just peeking through – very cool.
Dude…wow. I think you nailed it not masking in the exposure…this is perfect.
30 other photogs…that’s crazy
You must have had some sharp elbows to get this spot, because the way that moon hugs the side of the building is perfect.

Cool shot Jacob.
Sometimes I bring a cattleprod to shoo off other photogs when shooting these things. This months moonrise is gonna be just as bad on Alki.
Gorgeous shot Jacob! Well composed and you do see some of the detail in the moon, which is also cool! Well done!
Thanks folks! Actually, I was one of the last photographers on the jetty. I just happened to squeeze into this last little spot at the end. Turned out to the be just the right spot!
It was a crowded though, occasionally people were bumping my tripod which kinda sucked… I think I had to shoot this bracket series 3 times before I had a solid set to work with.
That’s your reward for staying later than everyone else! A beautiful image Jacob.
Incredible shot Jacob! MONEY SHOT! Love it.
Love the shot! The moon rising and the reflection really give that extra “oomph” to it.
The game of lights, colors and reflection is superb !
This is a beautiful Shot… I love the whole Image…!!!
Awesome. Just a gorgeous shot!
Great shot! Love the moon peeking over the building!
