Autumn Dawn

Last week I looked at the weather forecast and thought… I really should get up early and photograph the sunrise. Conditions were forecast to be somewhat optimal, and I was excited at the fact that the days becoming shorter meant a less early call to rise. The night before, I was in two minds about whether or not I should go. I decided that I would regret it more if I didn’t, so I packed my gear the night before and in the morning, set out to a location to shoot.

I arrived before dawn and conditions were perfect. Faint, fluffy clouds in the sky. It was a brisk, Autumn morning. After firing off a couple of frames, a thick, heavy grey cloud flew in from the west, obscuring my view of the mountain and what I thought was going to be the view of the sun rising.

I got annoyed but thought better of it. I didn’t let it get to me and realised that if the wind kept up, the clouds may blow over and it could pan out. They didn’t quite blow over and the mountain remained obscured from view, but the sunrise from behind the Cascade mountains was certainly something to behold.

I’d never witnessed anything like it. Through the 400mm lens (which I’m still fortunate to have on loan from a friend in Seattle) I witnessed this majestic sunrise from behind the moutains and cloud cover. The seaplane which flew into my frame at the perfect moment clinched the deal. In a matter of moments, all annoyance from the minutes before sunrise vanished.

Never, ever leave a shoot before the end. You just don’t know what will happen.

  8. The God’s were smiling on you for sure for this one! An ethereal sunrise on it’s own, but the seaplane is a fantastic bonus.

  9. Terrific shot, I really enjoy the look of the sun rising through the cloud layer along with the addition of the seaplane. Nicely done!
